Support Moldova’s Green Transition: Invest in Energy Independence & Climate Resilience
Friends of Moldova is launching a dedicated fund to support Moldova’s green energy transition, energy security and climate adaptation. Donations to this dedicated fund will be used for small grants organized by Friends of Moldova to support high-impact initiatives in this area.
Since February 2022 Moldova has been in a rolling energy crisis. Electricity and gas prices have skyrocketed, driving up inflation and resulting in a major re-think about Moldova’s energy needs. Prior to this crisis Moldova was already ranked by the International Energy Agency (IEA) as among the least self sufficient countries in the world in terms of energy. This fact has been used by the Russian Federation as leverage against Moldova’s government and as a weapon against its people.
This vulnerability has exposed Moldova to external pressure and geopolitical instability, making energy independence not just a priority, but an urgent necessity.
Crisis has led to adaptation and a new way of looking at energy and the environment. In the last 3 years Moldova’s renewable energy capacity has increased by a record 8 times. In April, a record 36% of the country’s total electrical consumption came from locally produced renewables – mostly solar power. But there is much more to be done. Homes, community centers and schools all lack modern insulation and are highly energy inefficient. The need is great and there is much work to be done.
The Friends of Moldova’s Energy Independence & Climate Resilience dedicated fund will seek to identify underserved communities and high-impact projects to aid with this transition. We’ll work to find solutions to pair donations with existing programs so that a dollar donated to Friends of Moldova will be multiplied when combined with other grants or available loans. We may not be the biggest player in the game but our on-the-ground expertise and massive Peace Corps network of partners and friends means that we can assure that your donations go where they are needed most.
